As a young professional living and working in Grand Rapids, these are exactly the type of things Grand Rapids needs to do to help reverse the “brain drain” trend. Pursuing a differentiation strategy that integrates exciting activities in an urban setting helps attract my generation Y crowd and retains the people Michigan so desperately needs. I love it!

Wow! Look at the depiction of those rapids! These rapids must have been a magnificent sight. But in those days rapids were bad things, and dams were good. So the rapids were killed. People looked for fertile valleys to settle in and avoided the higher elevations. 90%+ of people farmed in some manner to support themselves. Polution and destruction was the price of progress and prosperity.

Now it’s just the opposite. All over the country dams are being removed and the higher elevations are the pricey spots. Less than 2% of us are directly involved in farming. Cleaning up the messes of the past and trying to restore some of what was lost often determines progress and prosperity in today’s world.

For tomorrow’s Art Prize paddle - show up at Ah Nab Awen Park at about 1:00 so we can get everyone unloaded and get the shuttle figured out. Powers Outdoors will have a limited number of discounted kayak rentals for us. But you must reserve your boat today or tonight - I’ll be picking up the trailer tomorrow morning and bringing it to the park! I WON’T be bringing any extras. Post here, or on MY Facebook page.

We’re now considering a take-out further downstream at the Hopewell Indian Mounds Park. But we’ll decide on that at the put-in park tomorrow. Bring your cameras!

Ahhhhhh, but can a determined kayaker get up the weirs also ?
Will the water level be sooo low at the bottom weir so no
standing wave occurs, hence really no playboat kayak fun ?

There’s no question in my mind that these modifications would be a big benefit to the downtown area. Other towns seem to be realizing this too, as an increasing number of “recreational” and “whitewater park” projects are undertaken across the country. Here’s a couple examples of near term projects in Ohio and Illinios…
